Abstract

The article aims to show the importance of a needs analysis in the design or redesign of academic courses in French as a foreign language. It first defines the term « needs » and, after demonstrating the benefits of a needs analysis, presents the results of a study undertaken amongst the undergraduate students in the French Section of the School of Languages and Literatures of the University of Cape Town. These results serve as the basis for suggestions regarding the restructuring of the French courses offered at this university. Foremost amongst these suggestions are an improved articulation of activities aiming at developing communication skills, a better integration of the outcomes of the multimedia laboratory sessions and core activities, as well as the creation of a course for professional communication from beginner level.
