The African Academy of Languages (ACALAN), which is a special institution of the African Union charged with language planning and language policy matters on the continent, refers to the languages of the former colonial powers in Africa as « partner » languages. This is a way of recognizing that these languages are now a permanent part of the African linguascape and that co-existence, rather than displacement, should be the mode of engagement in the language domain.
