n French Studies in Southern Africa - La déconstruction textuelle comme poétique du « thanatos » dans d'Anne Françoise Garréta

What are the mechanisms of deconstruction in the novel of Anne Françoise Garréta? The answer to this question lies in what may be termed the thanatographic pact. Its strategy rests on a formal postulate, that of a serial-killer whose task is to kill all the characters of the Proustian narrative. If this act of rewriting is made against the background of cruelty, it is to undermine the logocentric trends of the narrative and to show up writing as a search of legitimacy imbedded in autoreferential processes. This game of demolition opens up spaces of fascination and transcreation to be reworked by the reader's imagination.
