Many forms of administration of state affairs, in other words many administrative models, emerged and were developed throughout the history of mankind. Some of them were applied in relatively modest conditions of small states; others operated within large empires, either based on a national principle or on multinational and multicultural states. Some of them left hardly any trace in history; others proved their viability by their longevity. One of the models of state administration which undoubtedly stood the test of time was the organisation of central state administration in Rome in the period of the Principate, followed by the slightly modified administration of the Late Roman Empire.
