oa Fundamina : A Journal of Legal History - Quae legentem fefellissent, transferentem fugere non possunt
The foundation stone of Eric's services to the law - his punctilious interpretation of texts - is a sound knowledge of classical philology and general linguistics. Without these there can be no accurate translation, and, without accurate translation, a scholar cannot establish the full significance of a text. As Pliny said (Ep 7.9.2), "[w]hat has eluded one who reads, cannot escape one who translates". This is as true today as it was in the first century AD.
