The intention of the study was to explore leadership challenges facing female employees within the telecommunications industry. Theories based on gender, traits, leadership, the hierarchy of needs and development were used as the theoretical framework and a systems thinking approach was used to assist in looking towards a broader perspective. The qualitative research approach was used. In gathering data, semi-structured, in-depth interviews were conducted with female employees. Thematic analysis was used to analyse data. Analysis and interpretation involved identifying themes, coding and interpretation. The study identified specific challenges preventing female employees from moving into leadership positions. These include the link between their leadership aspirations and their existing qualifications, age, and how candidates are recruited and placed for positions. Implications for management include management development for female employees.
