Since 1996 there has been a continuous debate in the teaching of German as a Foreign Language aimed at defining the aims and goals of the discipline. This paper takes these debates as a starting point and investigates the problem of constitutive developments in the teaching of German as a Foreign Language, as well as looking at future perspectives. It addresses questions of research into textbooks, autonomy of teachers, implementation of new media, intercultural learning and multi-lingualism. The paper ends by presenting prognoses for further development of the discipline.
