The article is intended to introduce computer-assisted language teaching to language practitioners with little or no prior knowledge of the field. It was conceived as part of an M.Phil. programme in Hypermedia for Language Learning which is offered by the author, and attempts to outline the present state of computer-assisted language instruction as a function of formative historical developments, and to provide a preview of things to come. Although the report is of a general nature, the software examples and websites referred to mainly pertain to German as a foreign language.
