Abstract

The German literature of the 90s was highly politicised. The main reason for this was the German. One consequence of the unification was that East German history tended to be viewed retrospectively from the perspective of its collapse. Another was that after the fall of the Berlin Wall, the Federal Republic with its forty-year history had ceased to exist in its previous form. Moreover, the re-establishment of a powerful German state in the centre of Europe evoked a new discussion about the national-socialist past. This article traces the political discourse of the 90s as it is reflected in a number of German novels of this period.
