The image of Germany in Senegal is marked by French ideas concerning its European neighbour. In France there are two parallel and independent tendencies when it comes to the perception of Germany - a literary-philosophical one and a political-ethnic one. The philosophical-literary perspective is characterised by the interpretation of important aspects of German thought, and specific values are attached to it. The political-ethnic perspective attempts to describe the German mentality. In contrast to the philosophical-literary interpretation it is primarily negative. The Senegalese image of Germany is dominated by two strands - the first is widespread, while the second is only held by the country's intellectual elite. The image of Germany held by Senegalese journalists concentrates on topics like right-wing doctrines and activities in Germany, xenophobia and German development aid. The academic image of Germany concentrates mainly on the country's philosophy and literature.
