Abstract

Not yet fifty, Wolfgang Koeppen fought against some kind of writer's block, at first travelling, then trying new beginnings and staying with fragments. But the novelist would not have agreed with that version of a writer's block. And his work, read under the aspect of border experience concedes that he was right in this. There are borders, boundaries and frontiers in his novels - borders between countries, simple and / or sophisticated walls out of stone or glass, outside and inside partitions. For Koeppen, the horror of truth lies behind walls. Considering this, Koeppen was right to refuse what might be called writer's block. Instead, to write or not to write had to be a lifelong traumatic struggle.
