This article presents the situation of teaching of German in Senegal. As a legacy of colonial times, it was first dominated by French, from the seventies on by German teachers. When Germany came into the leading position, it immediately encouraged the process of africanization. Today German is taught by African teachers and professors trained on both continents, Africa and Europe (Germany, Austria and France). After a short overview about the history of German in Senegalese educational institutions, the paper focusses on its present situation on high-school and university-level. The department of German Studies at the University of Dakar is in the heart of the presentation that leads from curriculum to an analysis of a questionnaire about the motivation and interest of the students and their later job- perspectives.
