On the basis of a reflection on my own research, the following contribution describes where there are problems if one wants to deal ethnographically with foreign cultural data. It describes different levels of translation problems, and argues for a translation of data which are to be described ethnographically, which is close to the text and removed from the standard language. It further describes how one can create access to foreign cultural thinking with the help of an ethnographic semantics.
