Dealing with the origins as well as the effects of German fascism has changed in (West) German literature over the past five decades, the tendency being towards a more populist approach to the subject matter. The examples used in this text will range from Wolfgang Koeppen (1950s) to Bernhard Schlink's (1995), Hans-Ulrich Treichel's (1998), Günter Grass' (2002) and Uwe Timm's (2003); all authors will be dealt with in some detail and will be linked to historical events, debates as well as some films, and the public's reactions to them.
