Multilingualism in South Tyrol - A model for Europe or the surrender to history?
Italy's appropriation of the formerly Austrian lands of South Tyrol in 1919 resulted in a long-lasting oppression of the customs and traditions of the mainly German-speaking population of that province. This article analyzes the relationship between competing languages in both South Tyrol's dramatic history and the current regional autonomy.
