Abstract

The romanticist writer Brachmann (1777-1822) has all but been forgotten today. In contrast, her poetic gift is marveled at in the 19th century and the disturbing effect of her texts is discussed. Her way of life and her suicide arouse attention and become the talk of the literary salons. With her fairy-tale like story (1805) Louise Brachmann contravenes readers' expectations of the time. This contribution to the Journal für deutsche Frauen is considered as a fundamental critique of the bourgeois formulation of notions of beauty with the aim of social control and furthermore negates the notions of progress of the Enlightenment. The author pointedly expresses the reflection on love and death that arose around 1800.
