Abstract

Translating culturally specific situations can lead to misunderstanding and misinterpretation, if the translator is not adequately acquainted with the original culture. Postcolonial authors who must write in the language of the previous colonial power - i.e. in a foreign language - are not seldomly exposed to the complex phenomenon of bilingualism; i.e. the influence of their own language resonates in the writing process. Bilingualism can be clearly discerned in Ahmadou Kourouma's novels. This author confesses to the use of a hybrid language.
