Abstract

Hans Christoph Buch's novel deals with the Ruandan genocide. Underlying this text is the travelogue of the Africa explorer, Richard Kandt. The entwinement of fiction and historical events confers on the novel a documentary character. The novel outlines on several levels African situations and conditions. At the same time it gives a multifaceted characterization of the way in which European travellers or explorers throughout the centuries perceived and are still perceiving faraway places. This essay reflects on these different aspects from a hermeneutic point of view.
