Abstract

"Eine winterliche Reise zu den Flüssen Donau, Save, Morawa und Drina oder Gerechtigkeit für Serbien" could be interpreted as what Handke calls an inductive method for evading the postmodern context of delusion. Contextualizing Handke's engagement in former Yugoslavia in his earlier works, I argue in this paper that his experiments with the perception of 'Unmittelbarkeit' must fall back on the belief in the unshakeable identification of what reality is. This even applies to his strategies of indicating only indifference towards all possibilities of describing reality. Nevertheless, such literary techniques of apparition of the non-identical might be convincing, as they reflect insight into the impossibility of identification. Text analyses of documents following the publication of "Eine winterliche Reise" in 1996 prove how the motif of non-identification was perpetuated, systematically leading to the non-awarding (sic) of the Heinrich Heine-Preis in 2006.
