Abstract


The works of Jean Paul reveal a considerable number of allusions to Friedrich Nicolai and his influential review journal as well as to its numerous contributors (which Jean Paul often refers to as "Nicolaites"). Whilst having learned and excerpted extensively from the journal as a student, in the late 1790s he started writing invectives ("Ausfälle") against the reviewers, e.g. in and . In the new century, the Nicolaites represented an anachronism ("Achtzehnjahrhunderter"), and he castigated their ignorance of the genius of contemporary literature.
