Zur interkulturellen Begegnung in Peter Höners kenianisch-Schweizer Krimitrilogie
"Does one feel better, more intelligent, more civilised? - Are whites coming to Africa because of this?" Intercultural encounters in Peter Höner's Kenyan-Swiss detective stories.
Most German literature about Kenya or with a Kenyan setting still romanticizes the country and reduces it as well as its inhabitants to the wild and exotic 'dark' continent. Peter Höner's crime trilogy, set in Kenya, tries to overcome this stereotyped picture of Africa and African people and creates a rather critical view on Europeans and their behaviour in Africa. However, Höner portrays an equal intercultural encounter in the cooperation and later friendship of the two investigators, a Kenyan police officer and a Swiss private detective. Slowly, they can leave behind the stereotyped picture of the other and their culture, accepting each other, their differences as well as their similarities. This paper analyzes the intercultural encounters, as well as common stereotypes about Africans and Europeans in Höner's three crime stories, and the way they are overcome or remain.
