Abstract

Rilke's has often been seen as one of his most characteristic . This contribution argues that it is not the , the ball, which is the subject of the poem, but , or even more precisely, of Bergson, which knows no , no nouns and no verbs. This places the poem into a context of thinking about reality which is as much influenced by the physics of molecular movement as by the linguistics of the representation of reality. As Heidegger has said about Rilke, however, the poet lives on a different mountain from the philosopher, and so is a poem and not a theory, an attempt to formulate that unsayable which Wittgenstein has called .
