n Acta Germanica : German Studies in Africa - Dimensionen einer modernen Landeskunde : mit Anregungen für die Unterrichtspraxis




- 'Cultural Studies' or 'Area Studies' - is often neglected in the teaching of German at university level. Some students feel reminded of school rote learning of events, dates, and facts. Alternatively, is being reduced to an appendix of foreign language instruction which transmits its contents through the texts studied. Does an independent make sense at international universities featuring German Studies? I would like to answer this question in the affirmative. On the basis of my experience as a teacher of 'German culture' at a South African university, I would like to make a case for a modern approach.
