Critique of 'colonial utilitarianism' or an expression of a 'true internal Africa'? Women in Kafka's novel The castle
This paper investigates the role of women in Kafka's novel The Castle in the light of colonial patterns of utilitarian exploitation. It is argued that a 'colonial system' (Max Brod) can be discerned in the castle which can be interpreted as a critique of colonial rule. An alternative view is also put forward, namely that Kafka unconsciously instrumentalizes women in this novel for reasons which are linked to his biography thereby exposing his own 'true internal Africa' (Jean Paul).
