Abstract

Veza Canetti is an author still to be rediscovered despite the growing number of studies and monographs focussing on her work. Her texts - or what remained after a probable auto-dafé - were published only in the 1990's. The article undertakes a deep reading of two plays, deriving from the respective chapters of the novel . Both plays are being read as antipodic yet inextricably linked searches for modern literary expression. as a poetological comment on the tragedy in this perspective gains an aesthetic value in itself. The almost utopian credo in art and eros is quite the opposite to the „comedown" Preece wanted to see in this carnevalesque play in the ironic, yet often subversive tradition of the Wiener Lustspiel.
