By examining and comparing selected German and West African fairy tales, this paper investigates how judicial processes are dealt with in these oral narratives. The focus lies on the judicial processes, on the subjective and objective judgments often passed by kings or even by animals as representatives of the law. Questions of jurisdiction and of justice, however, are evaluated differently in fairy tales, thereby highlighting parallels and differences between Western and African oral narrative traditions.
