Abstract

In real life and in literary texts the experience of alienation in different societies results in an identity crisis. Encountering new cultures raises questions regarding the other and the self. When the other is regarded as an alternative conception of life, the self-image and personal attitudes are questioned. The personal and cultural self-perception are affected by the new cultural context and are subject to criticism. With reference to theoretical concepts by Homi Bhabha and to the views by Austrian author Barbara Frischmuth, the process of identity formation within Arab and Western cultures is investigated in an Arabic and German novel in this paper.
