Education can be defined as the sum total of all the ways, both formal and informal by which a person develops attitudes, abilities and behaviour patterns and acquires knowledge. In a restricted sense, it is the social process by which people are placed under the influence of an organised and controlled environment.

A meeting of heads of major libraries was held in the Department on 4th March, 1969 to work out the details of a course for librarians. It is hoped that members of the Association at large will co-operate in various ways to the success of this venture by expressing their opinions through the medium of the Journal, or directly to the Department of Library Studies.

Since its inception in 1928, Rhodes House Library in Oxford has been steadily building up its manuscript material. In addition, over the past five years the Oxford Colonial Records Project has deposited in the Library considerable collections of diaries and private papers of former Colonial administrators, most of whom served in Africa.
