Abstract

From statistics on the occurrence of mental handicaps in South Africa and the availability of institutional facilities for mentally handicapped children it appears as if there are insufficient institutional facilities for children under six years of age. However; there is a tendency towards accepting the fact that service delivery must take place within the community and that home stimulation must form part of such service. Until now the role of the Psychiatric Community Nurse has not yet been included in this facet. The role of the Psychiatric Community Nurse in home stimulation and the needs of the care-givers as n support system during home stimulation were examined by means of qualitative research, making use of a once-off unstructured interview with each participant. A thorough literature study in conjunction with other available data served as a basis for the formulation of guidelines for Psychiatric Community Nurses, in order to facilitate cooperation between them and care-givers of mentally handicapped children during home stimulation. Guidelines for Psychiatric Community Nurses focus on the training they must receive for home stimulation for the mentally handicapped child, the establishment of interpersonal relationships between the care-givers of the child, and the extending of services for the care-giver of the mentally handicapped child in the community.
