oa South African Health Review - The Health Act and the district health system : cross-cutting health systems issues

Abstract

A decentralised District Health System, based on Primary Health Care, is the vision for health services in South Africa. This is established in the National Health Act of 2003. Structures and systems for a district health system have been established; the impact of these structures and systems on human resources has not always been adequately considered. <BR>This chapter reviews the current status of the district health system in South Africa and some implications of the National Health Act. Some of the impacts on human resources are discussed.
