oa South African Health Review - Maternal, newborn and child survival : data challenges : reflections on the Millennium Development Goals - profile

Abstract

The identified South Africa as one of 68 priority countries with a high burden of maternal and child mortality and one of the 10 countries with least progress towards achieving Target 4 of the Millennium Development Goals. As part of a mid-term review of progress towards meeting the goal, the initiative selected indicators to track programmes considered to be effective in improving the survival of mothers, newborns and children. The programmes were identified using evidence presented in the 2003 and 2005 Lancet series on Child and Neonatal survival.
