Abstract

The role played by Adv. E.G. Jansen as leader of the Natal National Party in the period 1915-1924 The central theme of this article is the role played by Adv. Jansen, who emerged as a leading figure amongst the Afrikaner community in Natal, taking an active part in the establishment of the Natal National Party (N.P.) during the period 1915-1924. From 1906 Jansen was one of a small group of Afrikaners who played a significant role in the Afrikaans-speaking community of Natal. His involvement dealt mainly with the advancement of an Afrikaner consciousness. He wanted Afrikaners to meet the English on an equal basis in what was, at the time, a very British-oriented community life in Natal. This ideal caused Jansen to become involved in many Afrikaner organisations in Natal. As a prominent young Afrikaner leader his support for the N.P. was a significant breakthrough for the new party. His example persuaded others to join the N.P. From 1916 Jansen was a member of the management committee of the Natal N.P. In die period until 1924 he promoted his public image as an able politician with a moderate and open-minded attitude and his unbounded diligence certainly helped the N.P. to establish itself in Natal. Proof of his leadership potential was his election as provincial leader of the Natal N. P. at its 6th annual congress in 1920. This leading role as the champion of Afrikaner nationalism in Natal can best be assessed by a consideration of his broad objectives for the Natal N.P. in the period 1920-1924.
