Abstract

In 1830 about a dozen Afrikaner frontier farmers from the East Riet River ward (now Bedford) in the district which was then Somerset, undertook a remarkable hunting expedition to the present Botswana and the North-Western Transvaal. A re-examination of well-known documents as well as some new ones, has revealed that this expedition did in fact occur and that the hunters paid a visit to Mzilikazi, the much-feared king of the Ndebele - a finding contrary to the established belief that no Afrikaner frontier farmer had visited that king prior to the Great Trek. Upon their return, members of the 1830 expedition reported favourably on farming possibilities in the interior, with the result that for some weeks, enthusiasm ran high for the idea of moving there. These events throw some light on the somewhat obscure origins of the urge to migrate to the interior.
