Abstract

In September 1835 Sir Benjamin D'Urban planned the introduction of a permanent burgher force or militia and subsequently informed all the civil commissioners of his intentions. Although details of the projected militia system were apparently only to be elaborated at a later stage, officials as well as burghers assumed that these would include regular meetings and military parades that did not form part of the old commando system. This article indicates that the negative reaction of the Afrikaner colonists to the proposed Militia Plan should be viewed against the background of the reforms introduced by the British government from 1828 onwards in the local government and judicial system. A further consideration is the Sixth Frontier War and the general mistrust of the Afrikaner frontier farmers towards the British government.
