Abstract

, an Afrikaans literary quarterly, appeared from February 1929 to November 1933. The first editor-in-chief was Prof. M.L. du Toit of Pretoria, with J.H. Pierneef acting as art editor. From the fourth Volume (1932) Professors G. Dekker (Potchefstroom) and H.G. Viljoen (Pretoria) became the editors, with Pierneef remaining as art editor. Leading Afrikaans literary and artistic personalities of the time contributed to the periodical.
Although the chief emphasis was on literature, and much original creative work in Afrikaans prose and poetry was published, Dutch contributions and translations from the literature of other countries also appeared on its pages. Besides being concerned with stimulating the national and language sentiments of the Afrikaner, the periodical also aspired to promote knowledge and interest in a wider cultural sphere.
This periodical is a valuable source of information, not only for the cultural historian, but also for students studying Afrikaans literature and South African art.

Pierneef as kunsredakteur.
