Abstract

Bambatha se rebelle : 'n profiel - ouderdom, faksie, motief

In April of 1906 the deposed chief Bambatha of the small Zondi tribe in the Umvoti Division of the Colony of Natal rebelled against the government. After carrying out several attacks in his district he transferred the rebellion to Zululand, where it's suppression took several months.
This article examines Bambatha's Zondi people in order to find out who among them took part in the rebellion and what their reasons were. There is sufficient primary material from which to get a fairly clear picture of who the rebels were.
It is doubtful whether Bambatha would have mustered much support if he had not claimed Dinuzulu's sanction and produced a rifle and two emissaries from the king to substantiate the claim. The Impanza section guaranteed Bambatha a following, but he could barely enlarge upon it. The rebels were a minority, not particularly young, mostly from a specific section, and they participated at least partially under coercion.
