Abstract

"Waar was ons nou weer?"

The second edition of the King Report on corporate governance (2002) has created an opportunity for historians to make a contribution towards a general understanding of the historical development of the country's corporations. In particular historians can play an important role when it is necessary to perceive the extent of development that has taken place within individual corporations in South Africa since the early 1990s.
In this study there is an overview of the corporate phenomenon and the development of business history as a discipline, particularly in the United States of America in recent years. This specific area of investigation, which is related to corporate history, holds a lot of promise for historians in South Africa. After giving a brief outline of corporate history trends in South Africa, a few suggestions are made in respect of tuition and research opportunities.
