Abstract

The purpose of the study was to find out the extent to which special schools in Ghana enhance social skills development among children with mild and moderate mental retardation. Five special schools for the mentally retarded were used for the study. Fifty-eight teachers and one hundred children (100) formed the sample for the study. The hypotheses were tested using Pearson Product Moment Correlation coefficient and the t-test at p < 0.05. The main findings were that, placement of mild to moderate mentally retarded children in the five special schools had low relationship to their social skills development while teachers competency in lesson delivery correlated positively with children's social skills development.
