oa IFE PsychologIA : An International Journal - The mental health profile of some Nigerian undergraduate students

This study is concerned with the mental health profile of some Nigerian university students. Records of attendance in a university psychology clinic over a ten-year period were perused to determine the frequency of occurrence of mental ill-health conditions in the student-clients. In the case of the 170 clients (127 males and 43 females) included in the study, the results of the analysis of data showed that; (1) attendance at the clinic was more from the liberal arts courses than from the natural sciences; (2) the most frequently presented symptoms are anxiety based, and (3) the diagnosis of the problems were more inclined to anxiety and self-esteem disorders. The findings relating to symptom presentation and diagnosis were held as providing support for earlier assertions that students manifest peculiar psychopathological conditions.
