Abstract

This study investigated the effect of Basic Training Programme on Intra-personal coping and communication skills of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps personnel, Benue State Command. Three hypotheses guided the study. 238 out of the 650 personnel in the Benue Command formed the sample. A self structured questionnaire "Impact of Basic Training Programme on Intra-personal Coping and Communication Skills Questionnaire (IBTICSQ)" was used to elicit information from the respondents. Data was analyzed using frequencies, percentages t-Test and chi-square statistics. The results indicated Basic Training Programme has significant effect on intra-personal coping skills (x2 =145.36, df 1, P<.0005) and communication (x2 =142.25, df 1, P<.0005). The study also established that there was significant gender difference ( t=3.007, df = 236, P<.003) on the Impact of Basic Training Programme on intra-personal coping and communication skills of NSCDC personnel. It was recommended that the command should be encouraged to establish counselling units in all their area commands which will be manned by professional counsellors among others.
