n IFE PsychologIA : An International Journal - The influence of psychosocial factors on helping behaviour of Benue State University undergraduates

This study explored the influence of psychosocial factors on helping behaviour among 301(196 male and 105 female) undergraduates of Benue State University, Makurdi, Nigeria. The ages of the participants ranged from 17 to 40 years with mean age of 23.67 years. Cross sectional design was used for the study. The regression analysis indicated that agreeableness positively influenced helping behaviour (β= .20, p<.05). Neuroticism negatively influenced helping behaviour (β=--.23, p<.05). Gender was also negatively associated with helping behaviour (β = -.16, p < .05). The results showed that age, extraversion, conscientiousness and openness were not significant factors in helping behaviour. These results showed that both psychological and social factors are critical in helping behaviour of university students.
