Abstract

The study assessed the personality characteristics of area boys in order to determine if there are personality traits that are dominant among them. The participants were 110 area boys aged between 13 years and 41 years (x = 24.57, SD = 6.18) and 110 non area boys aged between 15 years and 35 years (x = 24.85, SD = 5.21) who were purposively selected. The Big Five Inventory (BFI), Psychopathic deviate scale (Pds) and Interpersonal Dependency Inventory (IDI) were administered to the participants. The result showed that the area boys differed significantly from the non area boys in the measures of psychopathic deviate, interpersonal dependency and assertion of autonomy (P< .05, df = 218, t = 1.96). The results were discussed in the light of personality and situational influences in the exhibition of behaviors.
