Abstract

This paper examined the relationship between leadership style and Organisational Citizenship Behaviour among employees of selected private companies in Abia state. A total of 262 respondents that were randomly selected from four private companies in Abia state participated in the study. Data were collected using two standardized psychological scale viz: Supervisory Behaviour Description Questionnaire (SBDQ) and Organisational Citizenship Behaviour Scale (OCBS). Data were subjected to multiple Regression analysis. Results showed that there is significant relationship between leadership style and organisational citizenship behaviour {F(2, 259)=97.99, R2 =0.43}. It further showed that the democratic leadership style independently and positively predicted Organisational Citizenship Behaviour (r(260)=0.609, p < 0.05), but an inverse relationship between autocratic leadership style and organisational citizenship behaviour (r(260)=0.510, p < 0.05) was found. The study concluded that leadership style, particularly the democratic leadership had a significant positive relationship with organisational citizenship behaviour among employees of private companies in Abia state. The study recommended that private organisations need to encourage democratic leadership style as much as possible to facilitate adequate display of organisational citizenship behaviour.
