Abstract

The study evaluated the commercial vehicle drivers' perception of the effectiveness of Federal Road Safety Commission road safety education programme on their driving experience, age and behaviour toward safety signs on the roads and highways. It also investigated the influence of drivers' educational background, duration of learning road safety, behaviour and knowledge on their attitude to road safety education programme. These were with the view to improving the quality of road safety education and training in the country. The study adopted a mixed research approach combining both descriptive survey and focus group designs. The sample consisted of 2,000 commercial vehicle drivers operating in the seven big inter-city parks in the eight local government areas that made up the Hadejia zone in Jigawa State, Nigeria. A 52-item self-developed instrument was used in the study. The qualitative data was collected via focus group. Data were analyzed using One-Way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), Protected Fisher's t-test, Pearson Product Moment Correlation and Stepwise Multiple Regression statistical methods at 0.05 level of significance. The results showed that commercial vehicle drivers' educational background, duration of learning road safety, behaviour and knowledge significantly combine to influence their attitude to road safety education programme. Further, there existed a significant difference in drivers' perception of the effectiveness of FRSC road safety education programme on their driving experience toward road safety signs on the roads and highways. However, a non significant difference existed in drivers' perception of the effectiveness of FRSC road safety education programme on their behaviour toward road safety signs on the roads and highways due to their age. The study concluded that continuous enlightenment campaign through radios, televisions, motor garages to educate commercial drivers is imperative in the country.
