Abstract

Previous studies have focused on the extent to which job demands affect psychological well-being. Less research attention has been given to how emotional intelligence moderates the influence of job demands on psychological well-being of health employees, especially in Nigeria. This study therefore, investigated the extent to which emotional intelligence moderates the influence of job demands on psychological well-being of health workers in Ondo State. Using the accidental sampling technique, a total number of 164 health workers (111 females; 53 males) whose ages ranged from 15 to 51 years with a mean age of 31.65 years (SD: 10.55) participated in the study. Two hypotheses were generated and tested with multiple regression analysis. The result showed that job demands significantly influenced psychological well-being, in such a way that employees with high level of job demands had a low level of psychological well-being [β = -.32, p< .01; R2 = .18; F(7, 156) = 3.70, p< .01]. Also, emotional intelligence significantly moderated the influence of job demands on psychological well-being, in such a way that health workers with high level of emotional intelligence had greater psychological well-being despite high level of job demands [β = .97, p < .01; R2 = .37; F (8, 155) =19.24, p< .01]. In order to improve the psychological well-being of health workers, Ministry of health should train its workers on how to cope with stress that may result from job demands. Such training may include stress management training. In addition, health workers with low level of emotional intelligence should be train on how to improve on their level of emotional intelligence.
