The purpose of this paper is to assess if counselling in Nigeria has attained a professional status. This is done by examining current practices in Nigeria to see if it conforms with internationally accepted professional standards. The paper attempts to answer the following questions: (i) What is a profession and what are the criteria for a profession? (ii) Has counselling in Nigeria attained a profession status? or iii) Has counselling met the established criteria for legal recognition of a profession which will enable counsellors to be licensed to practice? iv) What recommendations and suggestions are therefore counselling practice in Nigeria?
