oa IFE PsychologIA : An International Journal - Urban growth and rural land retreat in Ibadan area of South-Western Nigeria 1935-1990

Abstract

The factors, processes, and pattern of growth of Ibadan city were investigated and the consequent impacts on the surrounding rural lands, particularly farmlands identified. Population increase especially through mass rural exodus into the city created increased space demands for residential accommodation and consequently the loss of agricultural lands. The city sprawls sporadically following the major road arteries. The prime agricultural lands were the worst affected and the fall in land areas put into cultivation is quite steep. Strict regulations are urgently called for to save the fast dwindling agricultural lands.
