This study examines the relationship between period of confinement in prison (duration) and psycho-pathology (API and CCEI). Data were gathered from a random sample of 150 prisoners from four medium prisons in Nigeria, with a mean age of 27.8 years (SD=7.1). The longer a person stays in prison, the more adverse effect imprisonment has on his mental health or that prolonged incarceration causes severe psychological disturbances. The observed relationship between prolonged confinement and psycho-pathology was seen to be very important and at the same time disturbing finding because the current penal practise do not recognise probation and parole. To avoid the problem of recidivism, prison congestion, and as general concern for prisoners mental health, a more human penal policies and a thorough and carefully planned prison system was suggested.
