The World Health Organisation (WHO) defines Essential Drugs (ED) as drugs that satisfy health needs of the majority of the population. They should therefore be available at all times in adequate amounts and in the appropriate dosage forms at all levels of health care delivery system of the country. Their selection is based on the most common diseases. The concept of essential drugs was approved by the World Health Assembly In 1975. In 1977, the World Health Organisation (WHO) produced the first model list of essential drugs.
