oa IFE PsychologIA : An International Journal - Organisational effectiveness - definition, criteria and evaluation - a review

Abstract

The purpose of this review paper is to examine three key areas, of definition criteria and the evaluation of organizational effectiveness. Several alternative definitions and viewpoints were examined while concluding that there is no one that is universally accepted. However, four common approaches in the literature were compared; that is, goal attainment: systems' strategic constituencies; and competing values. Several criteria for organizational effectiveness were also listed indicating that there is lack of consensus and that there may be no need for one. Some measurement problem identified include construct validity criterion stability, time perspective and precision. A few empirical studies on Nigeria were discussed.
